Sullivan Hill is pleased to announce that Robert Allenby (Insurance), Timothy Earl (Insurance), Jim Hill (Bankruptcy), Shailendra (Shay) Kulkarni (Construction), Joseph Marshall (Business Transactions), Donald Rez (Antitrust & Trade Regulation),Gary Rudolph (Insolvency & Commercial Bankruptcy),  John Engel (Business Transactions), Jonathan Dabbieri (Commercial & Business Litigation),  ​James Drummond (Construction), Kathleen Cashman-Kramer (Business & Commercial Litigation) and Candace Carroll (Personal Injury) have been recognized by San Diego Magazine as 2022 Top Lawyers in San Diego.

Managing Shareholder Robert Allenby serves as a member of the Executive Committee, chair of the Litigation practice group, and firm counsel. He has extensive experience in all aspects of litigation, with an emphasis in construction disputes, insurance coverage litigation, employment disputes and general business litigation. He also has significant experience in anti-SLAPP, appellate and environmental litigation and alternative dispute resolution.

Shareholder Timothy Earl is the chair of Sullivan Hill’s Construction and Insurance practice group and practices primarily in the areas of construction litigation, insurance coverage and business litigation. His insurance coverage practice involves representation of policyholders and insurance companies in a variety of insurance coverage disputes primarily involving property damage or bodily injury arising out of construction defect and asbestos claims. He also represents policyholders and insurers in breach contract, declaratory relief, bad faith, unlawful business practices and Insurance Code Section 11580 claims.

A founding member of the firm, chair of its Insolvency and Commercial Bankruptcy practice group, and member of its Executive Committee, shareholder Jim Hill practices primarily in the areas of bankruptcy, insolvency and commercial law. His bankruptcy and receivership practice includes representation of creditors, bankruptcy trustees, state and federal receivers and select bankruptcy debtors in Chapter 11 business reorganization cases, and he has served as a court-appointed examiner and mediator.  Hill served two terms as the inaugural Chair of the California Lawyers Association (CLA) and was Chair of its Business Law Section and Co-Chair of its Insolvency Law Committee before CLA’s separation from the State Bar of California.

Shareholder Shay Kulkarni is a member of the Construction, Insurance and Litigation practice groups. He focuses his practice primarily in the areas of construction and real estate litigation, insurance coverage litigation and analysis and complex civil litigation. He also practices in the areas of surety litigation and construction-industry contracts.

Shareholder Joseph Marshall is chair of the Business & Corporate Transaction and Real Estate Law practice groups. He has extensive experience in all phases of real estate sales, purchases, leasing and financing corporate organizations, acquisitions, joint ventures and partnerships and regularly represents businesses in transactions. He is also adept in tax matters, tax planning and tax controversy resolution, and handles estate planning.

Shareholder Donald Rez focuses his practice in the areas of business and commercial litigation and antitrust and trade regulation.  He has handled all types of commercial lawsuits, including cases involving trade regulation and antitrust, breach of contract, franchisor/franchisee issues, lender liability cases, professional malpractice and intellectual property. He has been involved in complex multi-district litigation, and his antitrust experience has involved claims of virtually every kind.

Shareholder Gary Rudolph practices in the areas of bankruptcy and other insolvency matters, including representation of trustees, corporate Chapter 7 debtors, Chapter 11 debtors-in-possession and creditors in commercial bankruptcy proceedings. He also is a mediator for the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of California. Rudolph currently is the chair of the San Diego County Bar Association Bankruptcy Law Section and serves on the executive committee of the Business Law Section of the California Lawyers Association.

Shareholder John Engel  has more than 50 years experience in most phases of corporate, real estate, commercial and business law, with particular emphasis on transactional work in the areas of corporate mergers and business acquisitions, institutional financing, real estate acquisition and development, securities regulation, organization of partnerships and joint ventures and commercial contracts.

Shareholder Jonathan Dabbieri  focuses his practice on litigation, including business disputes, real property and landlord tenant disputes and matters concerning creditors’ remedies and insolvency. He has advised clients in the negotiation of construction contracts, the perfection, enforcement, and defense of mechanics’ liens and other construction and real property disputes. His bankruptcy and insolvency practice includes representing creditors, chapter 11 trustees and debtors in possession.

Shareholder ​James Drummond has extensive experience in all phases of construction law, including contract negotiation and interpretation, construction financing, resolution of disputes arising during the construction process, prosecution and defense of collection disputes, as well as the litigation of construction contract and defect claims.

Of Counsel Kathleen Cashman-Kramer practices in the areas of bankruptcy and other insolvency matters as well as in commercial and real estate litigation.  Her representation includes trustees, creditors and debtors in commercial bankruptcies. She has successfully tried matters in federal and state courts and participated in ADR proceedings before the American Arbitration Association (AAA) and other panels.

Of  Counsel Candace Carroll is a highly-regarded appellate practitioner with more than 40 years experience handling appeals in the federal, state and bankruptcy appellate courts. Her cases have encompassed a wide range of subjects, including personal injury, contract disputes, insurance and indemnity issues, wrongful termination, intellectual property, constitutional issues and complex family law matters.
