Jennifer Chang and Michael Zarconi attended the Washington Elementary School fifth grade promotion ceremony on Friday, June 13 where they presented awards to four outstanding fifth grade students on behalf of the firm.
As part Sullivan Hill’s ongoing partnership with Washington Elementary School, the firm sponsors two “Promising Young Attorney” awards, the coveted “Principal’s Leadership Award” and the “David Hopkins ‘Batter’s Up!’ Award” each year. The winning students are chosen based on citizenship and leadership and are recognized at the annual fifth grade promotion ceremony, where Sullivan Hill attorneys present the students with certificates of recognition and Target gift cards.
Washington Elementary is in the fifth year of a partnership with Sullivan Hill that allows them to provide students with invaluable educational experiences—free of charge. The partnership was formed with the goal of providing students an inside look into the legal profession, but has many additional benefits. The firm works with students through a variety of programs including, leadership groups, mock trials, job shadowing, and Lunch with Lawyers.
Little Italy’s Washington Elementary School is the oldest elementary school in downtown San Diego, and is celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2014. Many of the school’s students face economic and social challenges. Of the 300+ students enrolled in the school, 87% qualify for “financial hardship” benefits and 10% live in homeless shelters. Nevertheless, Washington Elementary is known for a curriculum rivaling that of a private institution, and the results are evident.
