Sullivan Hill Attorneys Selected as 2023 Super Lawyers and Rising Stars

Sullivan Hill Rez & Engel is pleased to announce that Shareholders Robert AllenbyJonathan Dabbieri, Timothy Earl, Chris Hawkins,  Jim Hill, Shailendra (Shay) Kulkarni, Donald RezGary Rudolph, and Of Counsel Candace Carroll  have been selected as 2023 Super Lawyers. Yaniv Newman and Michael Zarconi have been named 2023 Rising Stars.

Each year no more than 5 percent of the lawyers in the state are selected to receive the honor of being included in the Super Lawyers list and no more than 2.5 percent of the lawyers are selected to the Rising Stars list.

 

Managing Shareholder Robert Allenby has been selected to the Super Lawyers list in the area of Construction Litigation. He is a member of Sullivan Hill’s Executive Committee and serves as chair of the Litigation practice group and as counsel to the firm. Allenby has extensive experience in all aspects of litigation, with an emphasis in construction disputes, insurance coverage litigation, employment disputes and general business litigation. He also has significant experience in anti-SLAPP, appellate, and environmental litigation and alternative dispute resolution.

Shareholder Jonathan Dabbieri has been selected to the Super Lawyers list in the area of Bankruptcy: Business. In addition to insolvency and creditor remedies, Dabbieri practices construction and real property litigation as well as employment law. In his bankruptcy practice, he has represented creditors, debtors, debtors-in-possession, and Chapter 11 trustees. A veteran speaker and author, Dabbieri has lectured on bankruptcy issues at continuing legal education seminars sponsored by the University of San Diego and UCLA Extension and has been published in Turnarounds & Workouts.

Shareholder Timothy Earl has been selected to the Super Lawyers list in the area of Insurance Coverage. Earl is chair of Sullivan Hill’s Construction and Insurance practice group and is an experienced litigation attorney practicing primarily in the areas of construction litigation, insurance coverage, and business litigation. His insurance coverage practice involves representation of policyholders and insurance companies in a variety of insurance coverage disputes primarily involving property damage or bodily injury arising out of construction defect and asbestos claims.

Shareholder Chris Hawkins has been selected to the Super Lawyers list in the area of Bankruptcy: Business. He is a current member of the firm’s Executive Committee and practices in the Insolvency and Commercial Bankruptcy, Business Transactions, and Commercial and Business Litigation practice groups. Hawkins represents a variety of corporate debtors, bankruptcy trustees, receivers, banks, commercial landlords, trade creditors, asset purchasers and other parties in interest in all aspects of commercial insolvency, including bankruptcies, receiverships, and assignments for the benefit of creditors. He also represents clients with non-insolvency financial matters in both the transaction and litigation contexts.

A 17-year veteran of Super Lawyers, Shareholder Jim Hill has been selected to the 2023 Super Lawyers list in the area of Bankruptcy: Business. A founding member of the firm, a member of the Executive Committee and chair of the Insolvency and Commercial Bankruptcy practice group, Hill practices primarily in the areas of bankruptcy, insolvency and commercial law. His bankruptcy and receivership practice includes representation of creditors, bankruptcy trustees, state and federal receivers, and select bankruptcy debtors in Chapter 11 business reorganization cases, and he has served as a court-appointed examiner and mediator.  Hill served two terms as the inaugural Chair of the California Lawyers Association (CLA), and was Chair of its Business Law Section and Co-Chair of its Insolvency Law Committee before CLA’s separation from the State Bar of California. Hill received singular recognition for his contributions to the practice of business law in California by receiving the California Lawyers Association’s Business Law Section Lifetime Achievement Award in October 2022.

Shareholder Shailendra (Shay) Kulkarni has been selected to the Super Lawyers list in the area of Construction Litigation. Kulkarni focuses his practice primarily in the areas of construction, and complex civil litigation. He also practices in the areas of surety litigation, insurance coverage litigation and analysis, and construction-industry contracts.

Shareholder Donald Rez has been selected to the Super Lawyers list for the thirteenth year in the area of Business/Corporate Litigation. Rez focuses his practice in the areas of business and commercial litigation and antitrust and trade regulation. He has handled all types of commercial lawsuits, including cases involving trade regulation and antitrust, breach of contract, franchisor/franchisee issues, lender liability cases, professional malpractice, and intellectual property. He has been involved in complex multi-district litigation, and his antitrust experience has involved claims of virtually every kind.

Shareholder Gary Rudolph has been selected to the Super Lawyers list in the area of Bankruptcy: Business. He practices in the areas of bankruptcy and other insolvency matters, including representation of trustees, corporate Chapter 7 debtors, Chapter 11 and Subchapter V debtors-in-possession, and creditors in commercial bankruptcy proceedings. Rudolph regularly consults with, and advises, business clients regarding financial strategies and conflict resolution. Rudolph also serves as a mediator for the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of California and has been previously named Mediator of the Year. He is currently on the Executive Committee of the Business Law Section of the California Lawyers Association and serves as its secretary.

Candace Carroll, of counsel to the firm, has been selected to the Super Lawyers list for the fourteenth year in the field of Appellate Law. Carroll is a highly regarded appellate practitioner with more than 40 years’ experience handling appeals in the federal, state and bankruptcy appellate courts. Her cases have encompassed a wide range of subjects, including contract disputes, insurance and indemnity issues, wrongful termination, intellectual property, personal injury, constitutional issues, and complex family law matters.

Shareholder Yaniv Newman has been selected to the Rising Stars list in the area of Insurance Coverage. His practice is primarily focused on advising clients on insurance coverage matters and representing them in disputes and litigation relating to insurance coverage. From contract negotiation through project completion, Newman has experience advising and representing clients on issues that arise during the course of construction including performance and payment disputes, progress claims, and mechanic’s liens, as well as the disputes that arise from and occur after project completion such as warranty and construction defect claims. Newman applies his experience in representing policy holders on a variety of insurance coverage contexts to secure policy benefits for his construction clients, and leverages the existence and availability of insurance to obtain favorable early resolution of disputes.

Shareholder Michael Zarconi has been selected to the Rising Stars list in the area of Construction Litigation. As a member of Sullivan Hill’s Litigation, Construction, and Insurance practice groups, Zarconi has a wide range of experience as a general civil litigator including commercial and business litigation, construction disputes, insurance coverage, anti-SLAPP litigation, and labor and employment law matters. His construction practice focuses on large scale construction performance disputes for general contractors, subcontractors, developers and engineers. He is skilled in matters involving breach of contract and warranty claims, differing site conditions, extra work and delay claims, as well as professional negligence. Zarconi also has substantial experience representing policy holders in coverage disputes with insurance carriers and representing public bodies, maintenance assessment districts, and non-profit organizations in a wide variety of civil transactions and disputes.
