Business Law Section Chair, Shareholder Jim Hill, Reports Continued Progress Toward State Bar Restructuring

Jim Hill, Sullivan Hill founding Shareholder and current Chair of the Business Law Section (BLS) of the State of California, is pleased to report continued progress toward separation of the State Bar Sections, including the BLS, from the public agency State Bar and into a non-profit voluntary association of Sections as part of the overall restructuring of the State Bar, through enabling legislation referred to as the “State Bar dues bill” that recently passed unanimously in the California Senate and now moves through the California Assembly.  The BLS leadership continues to play a key role in working with other Sections of State Bar in planning for the future.  Looking to the future and beyond separation into the new entity, the BLS is already working to establish liaison and mentoring programs in concert with the California Young Lawyers Association (representing some 65,000 young California lawyers) to engage with young lawyers pursuing a career in business law.

Meanwhile, the representatives of the Council of State Bar Sections, including the BLS and the 15 other Sections of the State Bar, are collaborating on transition planning as they move together towards separation of the Sections into their new entity as early as January 2018.

The Business Law Section serves as a forum to educate its approximately 8,000 members on recent developments and current issues in all fields of business law. The BLS through its 15 substantive law standing committees provides a vehicle for the business law bar to communicate with other California lawyers, California and federal legislators, state and federal regulatory agencies, business trade associations and the public at large.
